Kamloops RCMP to recommend charges in crash that killed TRU volleyball player |

Kamloops RCMP plan to recommend charges after the Nov. 2023 crash that killed a Thompson Rivers University volleyball player.

That is according to a report from RCMP Superintendent Jeff Pelley that is going before the City of Kamloops’ Safety and Security Select Committee this morning, Jan. 30.

Pelley didn’t specify the crash in his report or provide other details, but he noted that crash – which also injured two other TRU athletes – was one of three fatal crashes that Kamloops RCMP responded to between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 last year.

“One single vehicle motorcycle crash that was determined to be rider error,” Pelley wrote. “One single vehicle weather and road condition related crash and one other multiple vehicle fatality crash that is still under investigation with charges to be recommended.”

Police haven’t said much else about the crash which killed 22-year-old Owyn McInnis, a Guelph, Ontario native.

They did say McInnis and his teammates Owen Waterhouse and Riley Brinnen were in a Volkswagen that was stopped at a red light at McGill Road and University Drive when it was hit by a Dodge Ram pick up truck. Police also said the pick up struck several small trees and four other vehicles in the area.

TRU hosted a Celebration of Life for McInnis earlier this month. They also created the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men’s Volleyball Athletic Award as a way to honour his memory.

Waterhouse and Brinnen are recovering according to the most recent update from TRU Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Pat Hennelly.
