No. 6 NC State survives Georgia Tech in overtime

NC State celebrates overtime basket vs. Georgia Tech

Channeling Marcus Paige-like magic, Georgia Tech’s Kara Dunn knocked down a circus three-point shot to tie No. 6 NC State 76-76 with less than a second remaining in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime. However, the Wolfpack jumped out to a six-point lead midway through overtime, holding on to secure the home win.

The Wolfpack carried a one-point lead into halftime, as neither team was able to pull away in a game that featured no double-digit leads. The Yellow Jackets were shooting lights out throughout the game, going 11 of 23 from beyond the arc, highlighted by Dunn who hit seven of her nine three-point attempts to finish with a game-high 31 points. It was a completely different story for the Wolfpack from deep, who made just three of 20 three-point attempts.

However, NC State was able to stay in the game with 13 offensive rebounds, providing ample second-chance opportunities. The Wolfpack also shot 17 of 21 from the stripe, making six more free throws than the Yellow Jackets attempted.

NC State’s Aziaha James led the Wolfpack with 30 points, going 11 of 20 from the field, and center River Baldwin provided a boost during crunch time, scoring eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Georgia Tech (15-12, 6-9 ACC) remains tenth in the ACC, falling to 0-7 against ranked opponents on the season. Meanwhile, NC State (23-3, 11-3 ACC) is now second in the ACC behind Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack built their impressive home record, improving to 13-1 in Raleigh on the season.

No. 1 South Carolina rallies past Georgia, sets SEC record

After trailing by seven at the half, No. 1 South Carolina came out on top against Georgia 70-56. The Gamecocks remain undefeated with the win and head coach Dawn Staley and crew set an SEC record with 43 consecutive conference regular season victories.

Yet, the Bulldogs getting the best of the Gamecocks 35-28 entering the half was surprising to many. Georgia’s Javyn Nicholson career-high 27 points were one of the main factors that forced South Carolina climbing out of the deficit. Prior to taking the trip to Columbia, Nicholson averaged 15.5 points per game.

In the third quarter, the Gamecocks relied on their scoring toolbox in the paint and behind the arch. South Carolina forward Chole Kitts converted lay-ups and center Kamilla Cardoso used her size over Georgia to make fundamental plays. Outside of the paint, guard Te-hina Paopao made four three-pointers. The last two she hit in the fourth quarter solidified the Gamecock lead chasing the final buzzer.
