Wild weather in Las Vegas had the NRL and spectators breathing a sigh of relief that Allegiant Stadium is enclosed for Sunday’s much-anticipated NRL season opener.

At 15 degrees with rain drizzling and winds up to 50 km/h, the NRL made the call to cancel a tailgate party that was set to take place in a parking lot.

Gusts up to 111km/h were recorded at the nearby airport earlier in the day, while there is a high wind warning in place for parts of Nevada, Arizona, and California until 10am tomorrow local time (PST).

Gates were scheduled to open at 4:30pm, however given the weather the stadium started letting spectators in 15 minutes early. Fan vision showed wild winds blowing around the stadium, and a tree down across a road.

It’s a much more pleasant climate inside with the stadium’s temperature set to a balmy 21 degrees. Manly vs South Sydney is underway, with Brisbane vs the Sydney Roosters to follow at 3.30pm AEDT.

BASKETBALL OVERTIME CAUSES US BROADCAST DELAY

Meanwhile, the start of the action had to be moved to cable channel Fox Sports 2 in the US because a college basketball game ran overtime.

The NRL was meant to be airing on the network’s primary channel, Fox Sports 1, but Xavier vs Georgetown going beyond 9.30pm EDT meant a delay — although the switch ensured American fans still had the chance to watch every minute.

The main channel was able to join the action about 18 minutes in, just in time to see Manly flyer Jason Saab streaking down the touchline, and Souths half Lachlan Ilias make a brilliant ankle tap to help bring him down.

MANLY FLYER REVEALS NFL DREAM

There’s no player as keen to showcase his skills today in front of American audiences than Manly flyer Jason Saab, who has expressed a desire to one day play in the NFL.

Saab has all the physical tools to at least interest NFL scouts, with the Sea Eagles winger rated one of the fastest players in rugby league to go along with his impressive 110kg, 198cm frame.

Saab told The Daily Telegraph that he’d give American football “serious thought” if the “opportunity came knocking”, while demonstrating a key trait that many NFL stars don’t lack – confidence.

“League’s the greatest game of all, but who wouldn’t entertain an opportunity in NFL,” Saab said.

“If I can have a cracker of a game … who knows what it could eventuate.

“Physically, I think I’m the best winger in the comp,” he said. “Frame, speed and athleticism in the air.

“I’m not saying that as an arrogant person because I know I’ve got more to do to become the complete player.”
