Gavin Wimsatt enters transfer portal: Will Kentucky Football pursue?

The Kentucky Wildcats are coming off an impressive spring practice as Mark Stoops and Co. embark on the new-look SEC this coming season.

The team is also welcoming its fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons as Bush Hamdan takes over the reins of the offense. Flush with talent on that side of the ball, one thing the team is missing is a solidified backup quarterback. Now, they have an option in the portal with a UK connection.

According to Pete Thamel, Rutgers QB Gavin Wimsatt entered the transfer portal after the starting job was awarded to Athan Kaliakmanis.

Wimsatt, a 6-foot-3 and 225 QB from Owensboro, originally committed to Rutgers over UK, Louisville, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and several others.

A former 4-star recruit in the class of 2021, Wimsatt started 18 games for the Scarlett Knights during his time at Rutgers. This past season, he finished with 1735 yards with nine touchdowns but also threw eight interceptions.

With Beau Allen and Cutter Boley both in the mix, there is some talent in the QB room but not a ton of experience. That is where Wimsatt could become a good option. The Kentucky coaching staff seems to agree after hosting UCLA QB Collin Schlee for a visit, though he ultimately committed to Virginia Tech.

One would guess he will likely go find somewhere he can start, but if he is open to the idea, this could be a good pick-up late in the transfer window.
