Girona defender Arnau Martinez has said that his teammate Oriol Romeu, who happens to be a Barcelona target, would fit perfectly in Xavi’s scheme of things.

Romeu emerged as a top target for Barcelona after they missed out on the signing of Marcelo Brozovic. The midfielder, who has a €10 million release clause, is said to be on Xavi’s mind and the manager is preferring the former Southampton ace over homegrown talents such as Nico Gonzalez.

Now, as reported before, the Barcelona management and the sporting department are divided over the acquisition of Romeu. Those sitting in the offices are of the idea that the team should bet on in-house players like Nico.

Xavi’s perspective, however, supports the idea that Romeu is someone who knows the position well and it is better to have those who have good experience.

It is said that Barcelona have already established contact with Romeu. And talks with Girona over the transfer are also understood to be progressing.

Reacting to the news, Martinez has said that his Girona teammate would fit perfectly at Barça.

“For me, he is a top footballer in midfield, a benchmark. This year I have been able to meet him in person and also off the field, it is incredible, especially how he works and with everything he has experienced. Each year, he accumulates more experience and he would fit perfectly at Barça,” the 20-year-old said (h/t SPORT).

“I haven’t spoken to Oriol, I don’t know what he’s going to do, but it would be a joy. his level has already been seen this year at Girona and I think he could perform perfectly at Barça,” he added.

Interestingly enough, Romeu is not the only Girona player who happens to be on Barcelona’s radar, as Martinez, himself, has attracted interest from the Catalan team in the recent past. Speaking about this, the former La Masia defender said:

“The dream is to be in a big team and win trophies, be it with Barça or with another team. Wherever it is, I want to continue progressing in my career.”
