“It Is a Very Personal Thing” – Mercedes’ Toto Wolff Terms Losing a

Mercedes began this era, uncertain of what will unfold. Red Bull had dominated the four years of the sport. Ferrari had recorded the longest domination when Michael Schumacher led them to six championships at the beginning of this century. The silver arrows broke that record at Imola GP.

Mercedes have absolutely dominated the hybrid era and there appears to be no end to their sensational run. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and driver Lewis Hamilton have dedicated their win to the team back at Brackley. Domination of such magnitude has several like-minded people pulling days and nights together.

In an interview, Toto Wolff looked back at building a seven times championship team. We often see Toto Wolff animated during Mercedes’ races. He explained why he takes the wins and losses so personally.

He said, “It is a very personal thing, losing is a humiliation. But more it’s about not meeting my expectations. I honestly don’t care what others say, but it’s just the standard that I set for myself and which I always seem to not get to. But I have to create a better balance in my life, certainly in the future.”

Wolff reveals what motivates Mercedes

Toto Wolff explained that the team keeps learning from his past. He further stated, “Avoid a sense of entitlement and stay humble. We see next loss around the corner and that drives us all the time.”

Wolff believes this allows them to keep evolving. The team doesn’t take the wins for granted and continues improving every race. Wolff opened up about his and Hamilton’s tough childhood and teenage years.

He explained that because of such a past, there is a lingering sense of not being good enough. According to Wolff, that has pushed them and the team to overcome any difficulty in their path.

Mercedes has dominated this era, and it appears the 2021 season will have a similar story. However, 2022 will mark the beginning of a financial regulation era. The domination has to end someday, the question that remains is whether the new regulations will put the dominos in motion.
