Rennae Stubbs explains why Novak Djokovic does not deserve sportsmanship award

Former six-time Grand Slam doubles champion Rennae Stubbs thinks Novak Djokovic not being nominated for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award should not be a surprise. This week, the ATP announced nominees for their annual sportsmanship award – Cameron Norrie, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe, Grigor Dimitrov, Hubert Hurkacz, Lorenzo Musetti, Matteo Berrettini, Maxime Cressy and Rafael Nadal.

After Djokovic was informed that his Australia visa ban was rescinded, Stubbs welcomed the decision from the Australian government. “Nothing to do with that. Novak is not a great sport on court, he’s been defaulted, broken racquets, etc.

Stubbs on Djokovic: He loses his cool at times, I have no problem with that

A fan then provided a list of sportsmanlike things Djokovic does on the court.

Stubbs agreed that Djokovic has a tendency to do some very sportsmanlike acts – but also noted the Serb has a tendency to lose his cool and that’s why she feels he can’t be a nominee for the sportsmanship award.

“Yes the list is long. He does what a lot of other players do, he also loses his s— on court too. And I’m fine with it, I did too BUT it doesn’t me he should get this award! You guys can’t see anything but love with him, you can’t be objective!

After receiving a backlash from Djokovic fans, Stubbs had one final message.

“Say something nice about Novak, I get attacked by Rafa fans and (receive love) from Novak fans. Say something not so nice about Novak, gets attacked by Novak fans and (receives love) from Rafa fans. All you people need to look yourselves in the mirror and say, ‘Hey, I might be slightly BIASED and therefore wrong!” Stubbs wrote after she received a backlash.
