In a recent interview with FightHubTV, the former heavyweight champion acknowledged that Benavidez has been chasing Saul for years now and is eager to fight him. However, Jones also pointed out that Alvarez has not accepted the fight yet. One of the reasons, according to Jones, is that the champion does not want to fight another Mexican fighter. Moreover, he also claimed that this fight will be tough for Alvarez even more than people think.

“He’s been asking for that for a long time. That ain’t him that’s been saying nope, Canelo hasn’t really taken it yet, but it’s not David that said no. Canelo said he didn’t want to fight another Mexican. David’s been chasing Canelo for years now. You know it’s a tough fight for him, tougher than people think. But I mean, I think David definitely wants to fight. I just don’t know. You know, I think Canelo is probably waiting for the right time,” said Jones.

Jones Jr.’s recent comments shed some light on the obstacles and challenges that both fighters will face in this matchup. However, there is a window where the fight can be made and Benavidez’s father seems ready to move on if the fight cannot be booked.

Benavidez Sr. rules out waiting for the Alvarez fight

Jose Benavidez Sr., who is both the father and trainer of David Benavidez, spoke with FightHubTV and shared their plan for the boxer’s future fight. Moreover, the plan does not include waiting for Alvarez as he announced that his son could be back in the ring as soon as September.

I mean, we’re gonna stay active and if we fight Canelo, good, and if not, he’s gonna get stripped of his belts and I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’re going to continue with our era, our careers. We can’t be waiting for Canelo forever. We’re looking to fight in September and if it’s Canelo, good, if not, it’s gonna be somebody else,” he said.
