Manchester United inexplicably threw away a two-goal lead on Thursday evening as they drew their Europa League quarter-final first leg with Sevilla 2-2.

Two goals from Marcel Sabitzer put United in the driving seat early on, but a failure to increase their lead saw the Spanish side grow into it, with two own-goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire seeing honours even by full-time. What’s more concerning for Erik ten Hag will be injuries to both Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

The latter went off at half-time for Maguire, with Martinez dropping to the floor under no pressure in the 86th minute and holding the back of his ankle. The defender was eventually carried off by Sevilla’s Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel. Ten Hag confirmed late on Thursday night that the Argentinian did not suffer an Achilles injury, as was first feared.

There were positives in the two goals for Marcel Sabitzer, who was again brilliant in an advanced role, while Antony enjoyed another dangerous game on the left wing.
