Alexis Mac Allister has been given permission by Brighton to undergo a medical as he closes in on a move to Liverpool.

Personal terms have already been agreed with the Argentina international, who is expected to sign a five-year contract.

Liverpool were able to trigger a clause in the new contract he signed last October. The fee is likely to be undisclosed but is understood to be in excess of £45million.

Several other clubs were also keen on the World Cup winner, but despite Liverpool missing out on Champions League qualification, his heart was set on moving to Anfield following positive discussions with Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool moved decisively to get the deal wrapped up prior to Mac Allister joining up with the Argentina squad. They face Australia in Beijing on June 15.

The 24-year-old emerged as Liverpool’s top priority for the summer window after they dropped out of the race to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham in April.

Mac Allister scored 12 goals and contributed three assists for Brighton in 40 appearances in all competitions in 2022-23 as they secured European football for the first time in their history.

Mahmoud Dahoud will be one of those tasked with replacing him for Brighton with a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund to soon be confirmed, while James Milner is set to go the other way after the expiration of his contract following eight years at Anfield.

What would Mac Allister bring to Liverpool?

Analysis by Mark Carey

Mac Allister has made himself indispensable in a central midfield role at Brighton. His ability to retain possession, elude his immediate opponent, and build attacks are among his key strengths.

He will often drift into pockets of space between the lines, and look to play in those ahead of him and his relationship with Moises Caicedo has been one of the strongest in the Premier League this season.

While Mac Allister has the stamina to press actively when Brighton lose the ball, he is less of a ball-winner than Caicedo and has room to improve when defending in more of an organised block.

Nevertheless, it is what he offers you on the ball that is most appealing. Defensive midfield, central midfield, attacking midfield — wherever you put him, he will still provide that playmaking skill set.
