Jessica Pegula: “I no longer have the pressure of having to prove something”

Jessica Pegula reached the 3rd round at the Western & Southern Open, WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, while a few days ago she won the WTA 1000 in Montreal. In the WTA Insider podcast Champions Corner, Jessica talked about many topics, and she said she no longer needs to challenge herself.Pegula told: “The US open was my first experience being a top-ranked American, all that stuff but yeah I would just say now, I feel a little bit more comfortable in that role.

I have been winning for the past year now so I am doing pretty well, so I think you just get over it a little bit and you become more comfortable. I think you also hit that peak so you don’t really care as much, you be like, ‘Okay I already did it, if it goes away, it’s like okay.

I accomplished that and I can get back there,’ and that’s how I feel as I have been in the top 10 in the last year or year and half, I am not tied to it so I don’t feel a lot of pressure.”Jessica also added: “I don’t know, you just do it, you get experienced and then it’s not that big of a deal.

I feel like I am pretty confident in my abilities to handle stuff in a very nonchalant way. I feel like maybe a different No. 4. I feel I’ve reached a certain point, some girls might feel different, where I don’t feel pressured to prove a point to myself or everyone, I am like, ‘Okay, you already did it,’ and that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to be No.

1 or No. 2 but at the same time, I am confident that I have done very well and I am not just gonna sit there being pressured.”

Jessica won in Montreal

In the press conference after the win in Montrea, Pegula explained, also talking about her opponent Liudmila Samsonova: “I know that physically she wasn’t at her best, but I played and I think I had an excellent match. In fact, I made few mistakes and I can say: I played the perfect game.

I was playing loosely on my serve and more aggressively on my return, I got it all right and I can only say, it’s a beautiful day. My opponent had a crazy schedule, and she too played a few hours before the final. She’s not ideal even if not much could be done, unfortunately it’s just a matter of weather and scheduling didn’t help, she didn’t go in her favor.

It’s difficult when you’re in this condition, she’s a great player and I’m sure we’ll find her fighting again. It’s a great feeling to get these results, I’ve been very regular with finals, semifinals and some quarterfinals.I worked a lot and beating players like Gauff or Iga Swiatek in consecutive matches is not easy.

It’s true that I’ve never had many points to defend and therefore I didn’t have a lot of pressure, but I’m fine. Sometimes tennis can be hard on you, we play every week to win and unfortunately you often lose.We play many matches without winning tournaments but this week makes you realize that it was worth it.

Now I can’t wait to leave again and will go to Cincinnati immediately. Here the…
