Duke women’s basketball 2023-24 player preview: Emma Koabel

With the college basketball season right around the corner, it’s time for the Blue Zone to take a look at the 2023-24 Duke women’s basketball roster. Up first is sophomore guard Emma Koabel:

Position: Guard

Game breakdown:
Emma Koabel, a sophomore from Ontario, Canada, is coming into her second season as a Blue Devil coming off an impressive international campaign for Team Canada. Koabel helped her home nation pick up its second-ever podium position at the U19 FIBA World Cup. Seeing action in five games in the tournament, Koabel averaged 3.2 points — with an impressive 11-point performance against Egypt in which she shot 50% from the field and sunk three triples. Finishing with a 6-1 record, Koabel was a factor in Canada’s spectacular third place performance.
Looking forward to the upcoming season, Koabel will look to keep building her own momentum and confidence to provide a positive impact this season. An automatic shooter with model form, Emma will bring her strong scoring ability, and infectious energy to the court for Duke.
Role on the team:
With senior guard Vanessa de Jesus suffering a knee injury that will keep her off the court this season, and with the incoming class containing the third-ranked recruit in the country Jadyn Donovan as well as guard Oluchi Okanawa, Coach Lawson will look to Koabel as a strong presence to bolster the guard depth for the Blue Devils. Continuing to develop her efficient scoring and lively defense, Koabel will no doubt play an increased role for Duke this coming season.
