Di Marzio: Fiorentina gaga for Gil

“He’d be really good in Italy” alert!

Boy, has it been a busy news day or what?

And the reports keep coming, this time from Gianluca Di Marzio, reporting on his site that Fiorentina are interested in Tottenham Hotspur winger Bryan Gil. We’ve talked a few times before about Di Marzio’s veracity, but for those new to the site, here’s a quick summary:

• He’s pretty reliable when it comes to Italy / Italian players
• You can’t always trust his site, as he often has contributors write pieces that are fully #BatCountry
• Anything on his site from him directly is generally pretty good

In this case, points 1 & 3 are met, with the piece coming straight from the horse’s mouth. In short, La Viola are looking for a winger, and Gil meets the profile. Two other names are mentioned: Tomas Suslov, of Hellas Verona; and Rick Karsdorp of Roma. Both players CAN play on the wing, but Suslov prefers to play in midfield, while Karsdorp is ostensibly a fullback – so it’s unclear from the piece whether Fiorentina are considering different types of players for the vacant winger role, or if these are three separate transfers being lined up.

Nonetheless, Fiorentina like Gil, and he’s honestly surplus to requirements at Tottenham at this point. With the potential arrival of Timo Werner seemingly around the corner (SHH NOBODY MOVE), Gil would find himself pretty far down the attacker pecking order, with Werner, Heung-Min Son, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, a fit-again Manor Solomon, and potentially (though unlikely) even Dane Scarlett ahead of him.

It honestly hasn’t worked out for Gil at Spurs. He’s struggled with the physicality of the league, without the technical ability to make up for his physical shortcomings, and he’s had a pretty bad run with injury. This transfer therefore seems like a bit of a no-brainer for all involved, with the slower pace of Serie A likely to be a better fit for Gil, and Tottenham happy to get a fee after paying through the nose for his signing.
