While Inter Miami just begun their preseason tour, winger Facundo Farias has already played his final minutes this year after suffering an ACL tear.

On Saturday, the club released a statement saying the 21-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and is expected to miss rest of the season.

Farias sustained the injury during the Herons’ scoreless draw against the El Salvadorian national team on Friday. The match held at the Estadio Cucatlan in the nation’s capital, San Salvador, is the first of Inter Miami’s seven preseason fixtures spanning across the globe.

Farias replaced fellow Argentine Lionel Messi at halftime before his season came to an end around the 70th minute of the friendly match.

While shielding the ball from El Salvador captain Darwin Ceren, Farias appeared to step wrong on his left leg before falling onto the pitch. Farias held on to his left knee, visibly in discomfort, before getting stretchered off.

Farias arrived in Miami as part of the influx of talents that came with Messi’s signing in the summer of 2023. In 11 regular season appearances, he recorded three goals and two assists for the newly-formed and star-studded squad.

Miami has since signed Messi’s former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. The club further strengthened their team by adding striker Luis Suarez to the Barca reunion in Florida.

Upon Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami won the inaugural Leagues Cup and appeared in the US Open Cup final before failing to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs.

Miami will continue their preseason tour on January 22 against MLS counterpart FC Dallas at the Cotton Bowl Stadium.

They will then embark on a trip to the eastern hemisphere to play two games in Saudi Arabia, a game in Hong Kong and another in Kobe, Japan. They will end the tour at home by hosting Newell’s Old Boys at DRV PNK Stadium on February 15.
