The day a Manchester United player knocked out Wayne Rooney by boxing

Rooney, who took up boxing as an amateur at Liverpool, was knocked out by Phil Bardsley when the two got into a boxing match in their time as Manchester United players.

“We were having a drink, having a laugh, playing guitar and the next minute these boxing gloves came up…. Wayne just took a punch. Rooney was only KO’d for a couple of seconds but we all panicked. We didn’t know what to do and we had no phone signal. We were all thinking, ‘if he doesn’t open his eyes, we can’t call an ambulance, there’s no signal’ – so much panic!” recalled Phil Bardsley in 2021.

“Anyway, Wayne comes to and goes to the sink. I’ve got a big cut on my lip, blood everywhere and he’s got some blood under his nose. We look at each other and laugh.”
