Lewis knocks off UCI; Hawa’i, Long Beach, UCLA, BYU, Ohio St. win in NCAA men’s

Fourteenth-ranked Lewis, 3-6 in its previous nine matches and coming off a lopsided loss to Hawai’i the day before, stunned No. 5 UC Irvine at Hawai’i on Friday.

Later in Honolulu, third-ranked Hawai’i gave top-ranked and previously unbeaten Grand Canyon its second loss in as many days.

Second-ranked Long Beach State beat UC Santa Barbara in four, No. 4 UCLA beat No. 9 Penn State in five, No. 6 BYU beat No. 7 Stanford also in five, and No. 8 Ohio State beat No. 12 USC in four.

Benedict got its first victory of the season when it won its SIAC match over Central State and the line of the day went to Quincy’s Raje Alleyne, who had 33 kills in a loss to Maryville.

After a busy Friday, Saturday’s NCAA men’s Division I-II schedule is fairly light.

In the Big West, Long Beach State and UCSB trade places and head up to Santa Barbara.

BYU and Stanford go at it again in the only MPSF match of the day.

Two MIVA teams play independents when Quincy goes to Missouri S&T and McKendree is home for Maryville.

The EIVA’s George Mason plays FDU of the NEC. Two other NEC teams are in action when D’Youville plays independent Tusculum and LIU faces Barton of Conference Carolinas.

Mount Olive of Conference Carolinas plays independent Lincoln Memorial. Lees-McRae of Conference Carolinas tries to break its losing streak against Life and St. Andrews.

There are two ECC matches with Dominican playing Roberts Wesleyan and St. Thomas Aquinas facing American International.

And in the SIAC the two league matches have Benedict playing Kentucky State and Edward Waters versus Central State.

There are also three Pro Volleyball Federation matches Saturday when the Columbus Fury go to the Grand Rapids Rise for the first noon first serve of the season, and at night the Vegas Thrill are at the Atlanta Vibe and the Omaha Supernovas go to the Orlando Valkyries.

Lewis (11-9) of the MIVA knocked off UCI (13-5) of the Big West 22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11 behind 17 kills from Daniel Haber, 16 from Syver Drolsum and 15 from Max Roquet, who had six blocks. Shawn Baggs had 10 kills with one erorr in 14 attacks, an ace, two digs and seven blocks, one solo. Tyler Morgan had two kills in three errorless attempts, 49 assists, an ace, four blocks and two digs. Lewis hit .368 and had three aces and eight serving errors.

UCI, which had won seven in a row, including a five-set victory over GCU on Thursday, hit .361 and had four aces — three by Maxim Grigoriev — and 17 errors. Hilir Henno continued to lead the Anteaters, this time with 24 kills while hitting .419 to go with two assists, a block and six digs. He had no aces and five errors.
