Kyle Busch delivers warning, Martin Truex delivers points

Did Kyle Busch finally get a 2024 wake-up call?

Not sure if Christopher Bell has riled Kyle into quality results, but he sure as hell got his attention Sunday at COTA — a broadside to the driver’s side, in the middle of a hairpin left-hander, will do that.

Kyle’s “lecture” to Bell post-race not only got Bell’s attention, but it reminded us that, yes, Kyle is still on his toes and will raise those hackles when necessary.

It ended with this little gem of back-and-forth, starting with a simple question from Kyle to Bell.

“Have I ever wrecked you?”

“No.”

“OK, well, that ($#!+’s) coming.”

Two short-track races coming up. Cinch up them belts.

What’s this, is that Martin Truex atop the points standings?

None other.

Zero wins, just one top-five and one of five racers with four or more top-10s. But do the math and there he sits atop the heap.

The old days of points-gathering (think Terry Labonte) have been replaced by a modern method that includes stage points, and Truex has 51 of them (only two drivers have more), while also avoiding deep-pack finishes so far. His two outside-the-top-10s were a 12th and 15th — no real clankers yet.

Richmond and Martinsville are next, and he’s had success at both, so maybe he’ll soon be reminded of the taste of champagne.
