‘Have to be honest’ – Barcelona midfielder admits to facing an uncertain future

Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu has admitted that he faces an uncertain future at the club, adding that there have been moments this season where he has not enjoyed playing as much as he would have hoped.

It is understood that Romeu was Barcelona’s last-ditch signing, only acquired after their attempts to sign key targets fell through.

Upon arriving, the former Chelsea and Southampton midfielder showed a glimmer of hope, but as the season progressed, his continuity lost prominence.

“There have been moments in which I have had a bad time, like when I don’t enjoy playing. It has happened to me sometime this year,” said the midfielder as quoted by SPORT.

What does the future hold for Romeu?

Throughout this season, there have been several rumours connecting the footballer to a potential return to his former team by the season’s end.

Romeu has acknowledged the challenge of leaving Girona behind, yet playing for Barcelona has been his lifelong dream since childhood. When questioned about the possibility of rejoining Girona, he said,

“I want to finish this season with good feelings. If I feel that next season I can enjoy playing here, I will go all out. But I will have to be honest with myself.”

Romeu is currently under contract with Barcelona for the next two seasons. However, this does not mean he is bound to stay if circumstances demand otherwise. For him, personal comfort and family come before financial considerations.

“Next season we will evaluate and decide based on what we have on the table. It has been difficult for me to overcome moments in which I have disappointed teammates or the coach,” he explained.

Lastly, the midfielder admitted that at a team like Barcelona, one has to earn a place and he has not been at his best.

“You have to earn continuity, to be honest, I haven’t been able to show the coach that he could trust me one game and the other too.”

Turkish giants Besiktas are understood to be keen but the player wishes to stay in Spain, which could stop the deal from going through.
