US Open golf 2023 leaderboard: Latest updates with Rory McIlroy chasing Rickie

Records were broken on a low-scoring first round at the 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club as Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele set an outstanding early pace with both American’s getting into the clubhouse eight under par.
Fowler was the first to break the record for the lowest scoring round in US history before Schauffele joined him in the record books minutes later to take a share of the lead into round two.
Elsewhere, Rory McIlroy is just three shots behind despite a bogey on the last after an impressive round of 65 with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler (-3) and Masters champion Jon Rahm (-1) also in the red. Dustin Johnson, one of the stars of LIV golf, is right in contention too at six under par.
This tournament is the first time in 75 years that the US Open is being played in Los Angeles with LA Country Club hosting the event for the first time. A more challenging layout is expected for the players this afternoon but, with little wind expected, there may be more birdie opportunities on offer today.

Sam Bennett and Cam Smith, playing alongside Matt Fitzpatrick, are slowly going about their days. They have both recorded birdies since the hole in one and are closing in on the leader.
Bennett is down to -4 with Smith at -3.

51-year-old Padraig Harrington is rolling back the years with a bogey-free front nine that featured back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes.
He’s now even for the tournament and another solid back nine will see him make the cut for the weekend.

Wyndham Clark lines up a 29-footer on the 18th for a birdie but despite a nice pace the ball rolls underneath the hole and leaves him with a par.
He’s out in 32 for the second round with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes to come. All three are good to score on.

Rory is annoyed after missing a birdie chance on 15.
On this gettable par three he hits a lovely tee shot to within eight feet of the pin but the follow up putt is wide and Rory has to settle for par.

Nervous moments for Wyndham Clark, the current leader.
He’s off line on the 17th tee then finds a greenside bunker with his second shot. The sand save is flicked out to within four feet and after a long look at the putt Clark rolls it in on the left edge.

Rory McIlroy escapes the par-five 14th with a par after holing a pressure putt from a touch under 10 feet.
Tony Finau is now level with McIlroy at -4 after a birdie at the sixth. It’s the American’s second of the day.
