Is WVU Taking Too Long with Basketball Coaching Search?

West Virginia University has been in search of a new men’s basketball head coach for the past week after Bob Huggins resigned.

This isn’t a normal search for WVU Director of Athletics Wren Baker as a late-June hiring is unexpected and out of the timeline for coaches to be hired in college basketball. Pressure has been placed on Baker to make a quick decision recently due to the players wanting a new coach. A trio of Mountaineers Tre Michell (F), Kerr Kriisa (G) and Joe Toussaint (G) all officially entered the transfer portal on Friday. Some of the players have announced they are waiting on the new hire to make a decision on their futures with West Virginia.

The other factor is that WVU could end up just hiring in-house with assistant Josh Eilert in an interim role. Baker has conducted a national search that has included Andy Kennedy (UAB), Jerrod Calhoun (Youngstown State), Ron Hunter (Tulane), Ritchie McKay (Liberty) and others.

Is WVU really taking too long to find a new head coach?
