Bronny James expected to return to basketball in ‘very near future’ following

Bronny James is expected to return to the basketball court in the “very near future” after he suffered cardiac arrest last month during a practice at U.S.C.

“After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center led by Dr. Merije Chukumerije and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic led by Dr. Michael J. Ackerman and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center led by Dr. Matthew W. Martinez, the probable cause of Mr. James’ sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) has been identified,” according to a statement from a family spokesman. “It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated.

“We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”

James, the elder son of NBA star LeBron James, collapsed during a practice on July 24 and was taken to the hospital for treatment in the intensive care unit.

Bronny James would be eligible for the N.B.A. draft after his freshman year; there has been speculation that he will jump to the N.B.A. in 2024, when LeBron will be 40.

As a senior at Sierra Canyon, Bronny averaged 14 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 steals. He was named to the McDonald’s All-American game in March, where he scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the perimeter while adding 4 assists and 2 steals. James was a four-star recruit and chose U.S.C. over Oregon and Ohio State.

The U.S.C. men’s basketball team went on a 10-day exhibition tour to Greece and Croatia on Aug. 5, and James did not make the trip.

The Trojans open the season against Kansas State Nov. 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. They are also slated to play Seton Hall Nov. 23 at a tournament in San Diego.
