WVU Rugby celebrates 50th anniversary
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — With 50 current players and more than 100 alumni in attendance, West Virginia University Rugby hosted its 50th-anniversary dinner Friday night at the Erickson Alumni Center.
Men’s rugby at WVU started in 1974. The women’s team started shortly after, temporarily ceased operations and was then re-established in 2000.
On top of a celebration of the team, the dinner also served as a fundraiser for what one rugby alumni said is the state’s oldest recognized club sport. A portion of the proceeds from the dinner will benefit the current teams by helping to cover costs for equipment, jerseys and other supplies.
“Being the oldest club sport on campus, I felt like we needed to set a precedence for more club sports in the future to kind of see what we can do as a sport, as a whole,” WVU Men’s Rugby alumnus Trevor Stiefken said. “
On Saturday, April 20, current rugby club members will square off against alumni at the WVU Recreation Center Fields from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
